Kochi (colonial name Kochi) also informally referred to as the Gateway to Kerala is a vibrant city situated on the south-west coast of the Indian peninsula and is part of the district of Ernakulam. Kochi, Kochi's city's modern name is derived from the Malayalam words, Koch Azhi, meaning 'small lagoon'. - Chinese Fishing Nets, Fort Kochi
The chinese fishing nets (Cheenavala) are fixed land installations which are used for a very unique and unusual method of fishing and is distinctly unique to Kochi. These nets are set up on bamboo and teak poles and held horizontally by huge mechanisms and they are then lowered into the sea. Believed that traders from the court of the Chinese ruler Kublai Khan introduced these nets, but legend has it that theys were introduced in Fort Kochi by the Chinese explorer, Zheng He. - Fort Kochi
Fort Kochi or Fort Kochi is one of the three main urban regions that constitute the present day Kochi city in Kerala, and was under the possession of the Portuguese, the Dutch and the British at different points of time. Located on the Bolghatty Islands, this Dutch palace which is just a short boat ride away from the mainland was built by Dutch traders built in 1744, initially as a villa. Also referred to as the Hotel Bolgatty Palace, the palace has slowly transformed into an esteemed heritage hotel with the spectacular backwaters of Kochi as the background. Frequent boat service is available from the mainland, and the island has a tiny golf course with panoramic views of the port and the harbour.
